b. the number being omitted, מִן‎ is used indefinitely: — (a) = some of, — as subject Exodus 16:27 מןהֿעם יצאו‎ there went out (some) of the people, Leviticus 25:49; 2 Samuel 11:17, 24, especially in late Hebrew Ezra 2:68, 70; 7:7; Nehemiah 11:4, 25; 1 Chronicles 4:42; 9:30, 32; 2 Chronicles 17:11; 32:21; Daniel 11:35; more frequently as object, especially with לקח‎, Genesis 4:3 האדמה מִמְּרִי וַיָּבֵא‎ brought of the fruit of the ground, 30:14 give me בְנֵךְ מִדּוּדָאֵי‎ (some) of thy son's love-apples, 33:15; Exodus 12:7; 17:5; Leviticus 18:30; 20:2; Numbers 11:17; 13:23; 1 Kings 12:4; Isaiah 39:7; 47:13; Amos 2:11; Daniel 8:10 +, Song of Solomon 1:2 מִּיו מִנְּשִׁיקוֺת ישׁקני‎ let him kiss me (with) some of the kisses etc., Psalm 72:15; 137:3 צִיּוֺן מִשִּׁיר‎ (some) of the songs of Zion, Job 11:6 (Ges RVm) + often; in late Hebrew note also ֗֗֗ מִן יֵשׁ‎ there are some of . . . (b) to designate an individual (rare), Genesis 28:11 and he took הַמָּקוֺם מֵאַבְנֵי‎ (one) of the stones of the place (see 28:18), Exodus 6:25 פוטיאל מבּנות‎ (one) of the daughters of P., Ezekiel 17:5, 13; Nehemiah 13:28; Psalm 132:11; as subject Leviticus 25:33; Daniel 11:5 the king of the south וּמִןֿ שָׂרָיו‎ and (one) of his captains, 11:7, compare Jeremiah 41:1; Esther 4:5; 2 Chronicles 26:11; Ruth 2:20 הוא מִגֹּאֲלֵנוּ‎ he is (one) of our kinsmen, Exodus 2:6. (c) in a negative or hypothetical sentence (whether subject or object) = any, aught, Deuteronomy 16:4 מןהֿבשׂר ילין ולא‎ and there shall not remain any of the flesh, 1 Kings 18:5 מןהֿבהמה נכרית ולא‎ and we shall not destroy any of the beasts, 2 Kings 10:10 (compare Joshua 21:43; 23:14; 1 Samuel 3:19; 1 Kings 8:56; Esther 6:10), Esther 6:23 י מֵעַבְדֵי ׳מֶּןיֶֿשׁמֹּֿהJob 27:6 מִיָּמָ֑י לְבָבִי יֶחֱרַף לֹא‎ my heart reproacheth not one of my days: with אִם‎, etc. Exodus 29:34; Leviticus 4:2a (compare 4:22; 4:27), 11:32 (מהם‎), 11:33; 11:35; 11:37-39; 18:29; 25:25; Numbers 5:6; מִכֹּלanything whatever, Leviticus 5:24; Leviticus 11:34; compare 1 Samuel 23:23 (?). (d) peculiarly, with a noun of unity, especially אֶחָד‎, to express forcibly the idea of a single one: Deuteronomy 15:7 if there be a poor man in thy midst, אַחֶיךָ מֵאַחַרany one of thy brethren, Leviticus 4:2b if he doeth מֵהֵ֫נָּה מֵאַחַתany one of these things, 5:13; Ezekiel 18:10 אָח וְעָשָׂה מֵאֵלֶּה מֵאַחַד‎ (where אח‎ is a vox nihili) and doeth aught of these things; 1 Samuel 14:45 if there shall fall אַרְצָה ראֹשׁוֺ מִשַּׂעֲרַתa single hair of his head to the ground! (for שְׂעָרָה‎ as a noun of individual meaning see Ges§ 122t Dr), compare 2 Samuel 14:11; 1 Kings 1:52. (Probably a rhetorical application of the partitive sense, though the explanation 'starting from one' = 'even one' would also be possible. is used similarly after negative and interrogative particles, not merely with collective nouns, as nought have they of knowledge (Qor 18:4), but also with nouns of unity, as Qor 3:55 Ye have not aught of (= any) god, except Him; 19:19 dost thou perceive even one of them? 6:59 there falleth not even a single leaf (noun of individual meaning) without His knowing it. See further Thes, and WAG. ii. § 48 f. b), (e) (rare) specifying the objects, or elements, of which a Genus consists (the Arabic , min of explication, WAG. ii. § 48 g): Genesis 6:2 מכל בחרו אשׁרconsisting of all whom they chose, 7:22; 9:10; Leviticus 11:32 (מכל‎), 1 Chronicles 5:18; Jeremiah 40:7 (מאשׁר‎); 44:28 and they shall know וּמֵהֶם מִמֶּנִּי יָקוּם דְּבַרמִֿי‎ whose word shall stand, consisting of me and of them (defining the Genus embraced by ׃מי‎ compare both (of them), Abel as well as Cain, and Qor 3:193: Wl.c.). — On מֵאַיִן10:6-7, see אַיִןnear the end.

4 of time — namely

a. as marking the terminus a quo, the anterior limit of a continuous period, from, since Deuteronomy 9:24 אֶתְכֶם דַּעְתִּי מִיּוֺםfrom the day of my (first) knowing you (so 1 Samuel 7:2; 8:8 + ); 18:9 וָהָֽלְאָה ההוא מהיוםfrom that day and onwards, simil. Leviticus 22:27; Numbers 15:23; Ezekiel 39:22; Isaiah 18:2, 7 (where מִןהֿוּא‎ = הוּא מֵאֲשֶׁר‎; compare Nahum 2:9 הִיא מִימֵי‎ = הִיא אֲשֶׁר מִימֵי‎); וָמָֽעְלָה ההוא מהיום1 Samuel 16:13; 30:25 (Haggai 2:15, 18 apparently of time backwards); מֵאָזfrom the time of . . . .; מִןהַֿבֶּטֶןfrom the womb Judges 13:5, 7, אִמִּי מִבֶּטֶן16:17 +; ֗֗֗ מִימֵיHosea 10:9; Isaiah 23:7; Jeremiah 36:2 +; מִיָּמֶיךָ‎ idiomatic = since thou wast born 1 Samuel 25:28; 1 Kings 1:6 (מִיָּמָיו‎), Job 38:12; מִקֶּדֶםfrom antiquity Habakkuk 1:12; Psalm 74:12; Isaiah 42:14 מֵעוֺלָם הֶחֱשֵׁיתִי‎ I have been silent since old time; מֵעַתָּהfrom now, hence-forth Jeremiah 3:4 +, מִיּוֺםfrom to-day 43:13; Ezekiel 48:35, הזה מןהֿיוםHaggai 2:19. See also 5c, 7 c. compare Exodus 33:6 חוֺרֵב מֵהַרfrom Horeb, Hosea 13:4 I am ׳י‎ thy God מִצְרַיִם מֵאֶרֶץ‎.

b. as marking the period immediately succeeding the limit, after: Genesis 38:24 חֳדָשִׁים כְּמִשְׁלשׁafter about three months it was told Judah, רַבִּים מִיָּמִיםJoshua 23:1; Ezekiel 38:8, מִיָּמִיםafter (some) days, Judges 11:4; 14:8; 15:1, מִיֹּמַיִםafter two days Hosea 6:2; יָמִים מֵרֹבIsaiah 24:22: more frequently with קֵץ‎ or קָצֶה‎, Genesis 4:3 יָמִים מִקֵּץ‎, 8:3; Joshua 3:2 + often; Deuteronomy 14:28 שָׁנִים שָׁלשׁ מִקְצֵה‎, 15:1 שֶׁבַע מִקְצֵה שָׁנִים‎ (by which is meant not the actual end of the three or seven years, but the period when the third or seventh year has arrived); מִמָּחֳרָתafter the morrow (had arrived) = on the morrow, Genesis 19:34 + often; מֵהַבֹּקֶר2 Samuel 2:27. — 23:4 מִמָּטָר‎; Isaiah 53:11 נַפְשׁוֺ מֵעֲמַל‎; perhaps 29:18 (Kö581). compare 2 Samuel 20:5 and he delayed מןהֿמועדbeyond the appointed time.

c. in such phrases, however, מִן‎ sometimes (compare 1c) loses its significance: thus מֵאָז2 Samuel 15:34; Isaiah 16:13 not from former time, but in former time, formerly, Genesis 6:4 מֵעוֺלָם אֲשֶׁר הַגִּבּוֺרִים‎ which were of old, Joshua 24:2 dwelt of old, Psalm 77:6 days מִקֶּדֶםaforetime, מֵאַחֲרֵיDeuteronomy 29:21 (p. 30). — מִקָּרוֺב‎ literally from near, i.e. recently 32:17, of short duration Job 20:5, shortly Ezekiel 7:8; at hand (in a local sense, 1c) Jeremiah 23:23.

6 In comparisons, beyond, above, hence in English than: so constantly: namely

a. when an object is compared with another distinct from itself, Judges 14:18 מִדְּבַשׁ מַהמָּֿתוֺק‎ what is sweet away from, beyond in excess of, honey ? i.e. in our idiom, what is sweeter than honey ? Leviticus 21:10 מֵאֶחָיו הַגָּדוֺל הַכֹּהֵן‎ the priest that is great above his brethren, Numbers 14:12; Ezekiel 28:3 מִדָּנִאֵל חָכָם‎ wiser than Daniel, Psalm 119:72 + very often; Hosea 2:9 מֵעָ֑תָּה אָז לִי טוֺב כִּי‎; with an infinitive (sometimes with לְ‎) as subject, Genesis 29:10 וגו אֹתָהּ מִתִּתִּי לְךָ אֹתָהּ תִּתִּי ׳טוֺב‎ better is my giving her to thee than my giving her to another, Exodus 14:12; 1 Samuel 15:22; Proverbs 21:9, 19; 25:7; Psalm 118:8; 118:9 +; with verbs, Genesis 19:9 מֵהֶם לְךָ נָרַע עתה‎ now we will harm thee beyond them, more than them, 25:23 יֶאֱמַץ מִלְאֹם לְאֹם‎, 26:16; 29:30 גםֿ ויאהב מִלֵּאָה אתרֿחל‎, 38:26 מִמֶּנִּי צָֽדְקָה‎, 48:19 מִמֶּנּוּ יִגְדַּל‎, Judges 2:19 מאבותם השׁחיתו‎ they have done corruptly more than their fathers, 1 Samuel 2:29; 2 Samuel 20:6; 1 Kings 1:37; 14:9; Jeremiah 5:3; Ezekiel 5:6 + often; = in, preference to, above, Psalm 45:8; 52:5 (twice in verse); Hosea 6:6; Habakkuk 2:16, after בחרJeremiah 8:3; Job 7:15; 36:21; Psalm 84:11 (מִדּוּר‎) +: note also מִן נֹפֵלJob 12:3; 13:2 +?to (Ew Ges and others Hi; al. c. sometimes in poetry the idea on which מן‎ is logically dependent, is unexpressed, and must be understood by the reader, Isaiah 10:10 מירושׁלם ופסיליהם‎ and their idols are (more) than (those of) Jerusalem, Micah 7:4 מִמְּסוּכָה יָשָׁר‎ the uprightest is (sharper) than a thorn-hedge (but We from), Job 11:7; 28:18; Psalm 4:8 מֵעֵתbeyond (that of) the time when etc. Ecclesiastes 4:17; Ecclesiastes 9:17; compare Ezekiel 15:2.

d. מן‎ not unfrequently expresses the idea of a thing being too much for a person, or surpassing his powers: Genesis 18:14 ׳מי הֲיִמָּלֵא דָּבָר‎ can a thing be too hard for J.? (so Deuteronomy 17:8 +; compare Psalm 131:1; 139:6 + ), 32:11 מִן קָטֹנְתִּי‎, Deuteronomy 14:24 הַדֶּרֶךְ מִמְּךָ יִרְבֶּה כִּי‎ = is too great for thee (1 Kings 19:7), 1Ki 32:47 מִכֶּם רֵק‎: so with עָצַםGenesis 26:16, כָּבֵד‎ be too heavy for Exodus 18:18; Psalm 38:5, מָךְLeviticus 27:8 (too poor to pay), קָשָׁהDeuteronomy 1:7, צַר‎ be too narrow for, 2 Kings 6:1; Isaiah 49:19, קצר50:2, אָמַץPsalm 18:18, נמני ירום‎ is too high for me 61:3, גָּבַר65:4; מִמְּךָ ַהמְעַטJob 15:11 too little for thee ? מִכֶּם ַהמְעַטNumbers 16:9; Isaiah 7:13; Ezekiel 34:18 (see מְעַט‎; also on 16:20); often with an infinitive, as Genesis 4:13 מִנְּשׂוֺא עֲוֺנִי גָּדוֺל‎ is greater than I can bear, 30:7 their substance was יַחְדָּו מִשֶּׁבֶת רַב‎ literally great beyond dwelling together = too great for (their) dwelling together, Exodus 12:4; Judges 7:2 רַב מִתִּתִּי‎ = too great for me to give, 1 Samuel 25:17b 1 Kings 8:64 מֵהָכִיל רַב‎, Isaiah 28:20; 33:19; 59:1; Habakkuk 1:13; Psalm 40:6; Ruth 1:12: note especially מִן רַב‎ it is more than that . . . (but ? read עֲשׂוֺת‎ on analogue of 1 Kings 16:31).

7 מן‎ is prefixed to an infin.:
